Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care in Texas. Cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures and implants all sit outside Parts A and B, so most seniors pay for them directly. We see this catch patients off guard almost every week at our Plano, TX practice, which is why we quote the fee before treatment starts and keep payment routes open that do not depend on Medicare at all.

Dr. Jordan Hardin has been treating older adults in Plano long enough to know that the coverage question usually arrives attached to a real decision, like a failing crown or a denture that no longer fits. What follows is the coverage picture as it stands, plus the practical routes our patients use when the answer turns out to be no.

What Original Medicare Pays For and What It Leaves Out

Parts A and B were built around hospital stays and medical treatment. Dental care was deliberately left out when the program was written in 1965, and that exclusion still holds today. It is not a deductible issue or a question of finding the right paperwork. Routine dental services are categorically outside what the program pays for, which means no amount of cost sharing brings them back in.

For a Plano senior on Original Medicare, that translates into paying full fee for a checkup, a cleaning, a filling, a crown, a root canal, a denture or a dental implant. Medigap supplement plans generally do not add dental benefits either, since they are designed to cover gaps in Parts A and B rather than services the program excludes outright. Patients who assume their supplement covers the dentist often find out at the front desk, and we would rather they find out here first, with the ways to pay without dental insurance laid out in front of them.

When Medicare Part A or Part B Does Cover Dental Work

There is a narrow set of situations where Medicare does pay, and all of them share one trait. The dental work has to be tied to a covered medical treatment rather than provided for its own sake. These exceptions are real but genuinely rare, and they almost never apply to the care an older adult needs on a routine basis.

The situations that can qualify include:

  • Dental work performed during a covered inpatient hospital stay, such as treatment following a jaw fracture
  • An oral examination required before certain covered surgeries, including some organ transplants
  • Tooth extractions needed before radiation treatment for cancer of the jaw
  • Reconstruction of the jaw after an accident

Even where one of these applies, Part B cost sharing still runs as usual, with a yearly deductible of $283 in 2026 followed by 20 percent of the approved amount. A cracked molar, a loose denture or a deep cleaning does not meet the standard. Those stay on the patient’s side of the ledger.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Change the Answer in Texas

Part C plans, sold by private insurers, bundle Parts A and B together with extras that Original Medicare does not include, and dental is the most common of those extras. Industry tracking by KFF found that in 2026 nearly every enrollee in an individual Medicare Advantage plan had access to some dental benefit. Preventive coverage is the most widespread tier, typically two cleanings, an exam and X-rays each year at little or no copay.

The limits matter as much as the coverage. Many plans cap the yearly dental allowance, apply coinsurance to anything beyond preventive care, and pay the most when you stay inside their network. We are a fee for service office and are not in network with any particular insurance company, so we file your paperwork and claims on your behalf to get you the maximum reimbursement your plan allows. Before you book, call your plan and ask what it pays toward an out of network dentist. This rundown of how dental insurance works in Texas covers the terms that trip people up most often.

Not sure what your plan actually covers? Bring your Medicare Advantage card to your first visit. Why Texas Medicaid Does Not Fill the Gap for Adults

Adult dental coverage is optional under federal Medicaid rules, so each state decides for itself. Texas is one of a small group of states that limits adult benefits to emergency services, meaning treatment aimed at relieving acute pain, infection or trauma. In practice that usually looks like an extraction or drainage of an abscess rather than anything restorative.

What this leaves out is most of what keeps an older mouth healthy. Cleanings, exams, fillings, root canals, crowns and dentures are not part of the base adult benefit in Texas. Children are covered far more fully through Texas Health Steps and CHIP Dental, which is why so many families are surprised when a parent’s coverage turns out to work nothing like a child’s. Some managed care plans add value added dental benefits on top, so it is worth asking your plan directly rather than assuming.

How Our Plano Patients Pay for Dental Care Without Medicare

Roughly a third of the patients we see have no dental insurance at all, and we built our options around that reality rather than treating it as an exception. Our in house membership plan runs $40 per month per person and covers two doctor exams, two professional cleanings and two sets of dental X-rays each year, plus 15 percent off all other dental services. There is no waiting period, no deductible and no annual maximum, and products are excluded from the discount.

For larger treatment, we work with CareCredit and Cherry, and we also offer in house financing with no interest across several plan lengths. None of this requires a Medicare decision or an open enrollment window, and this guide to affordable dental care options in Plano covers what else is available locally. What it requires is a conversation about the fee before treatment begins, which is how every case is handled anyway. Our hygienists Tiffaine and Abbie handle cleanings and gum care, and our assistants Maricel and Sheila stay with you through the appointment so nothing comes as a surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Original Medicare cover dental cleanings in Texas?

No. Routine cleanings are excluded from Medicare Parts A and B, in Texas and everywhere else. To get cleanings covered you would need a Medicare Advantage plan that includes a dental benefit or a separate dental plan. Our membership plan covers two cleanings a year for patients who would rather not carry insurance.

Will you accept my dental insurance?

We are a fee for service dental office that is not in network with any particular dental insurance company. We will file your paperwork and claims so that you get the maximum reimbursement from your insurance company.

Can I get dental care here if I do not have insurance?

Yes. Our in house membership plan covers preventive care for a flat monthly fee and discounts other treatment. For larger procedures, CareCredit and Cherry financing are available, along with in house no interest payment plans. Not having insurance does not prevent you from receiving care here.

Do you offer same day emergency dental care?

Yes. We hold time in the daily schedule for dental emergencies and can almost always accommodate same day requests. Call our office first so we can assess the situation and get you in. Emergency services include tooth extractions and root canal therapy when needed.
